Willard Carroll Smith Jr who we know as Will Smith is a famous rapper, actor and director. He was born on the 25th of September 1968 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to mother, Caroline who was a school-board operative and father, Willard C. Smith Sr who was the owner of a refrigeration company. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School; he went on to Overbook High School. Will Smith and Jeff Townes launched a highly successful rap career; going with the stage name DJ Jazzy Jeff (Jeff Townes) and The Fresh Prince (Will Smith). They produced their music steering clear of the gangsta rap that was emerging then from the West Coast. Will Smith talked about teenage preoccupation in clean swear freestyle that was found safe and entertaining to the audience. Their first single as a Duo was ‘Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble’ which was a massive hit in 1986. The sitcom was a massive success and ran for six seasons. He continued in music production with Jeff Townes releasing another album in 1991 titled ‘Homebase’ featuring hits like ‘Ring My Bell’ and ‘Summer Time.’ Their final album as a Duo was produced in 1993 titled ‘Code Red.’
While still on ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ Will Smith started taking small roles in movies, first in the drama, ‘Where the Day Takes You’ in 1992 and also in a comedy, ‘Made in America’ in 1993. He followed up playing a role in the movie ‘Degrees of Separation’ also in 1993 Starring alongside Donald Sutherland, Ian McKellen, and Stockard Channing. He continued to climb up in fame, Starring in ‘Bad Boys’ next in 1995 where he starred alongside Martin Lawrence. His next step to stardom came when he played a role of an Air Force pilot leading the counter-attack against aliens in the epic sci-fi motion picture ‘Independence Day’ in 1996. He continued to fight aliens in his next movie, a comic sci-fi/action film ‘Men in Black’ in 1997 where he starred alongside Tommy Lee Jones, playing Jones’ recruit. He also rapped the theme song of the movie featuring it in his 1997 solo album ‘Big Willie Style’ bringing him much success. Will followed up with ‘Enemy of the State,’ a conspiracy thriller in 1998, his role in the movie earned him a nomination in the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.
Will Smith rose more in fame after Starring as Mohammed Ali in 2001 biopic ‘Ali.’ He performed of a lifetime, disciplining and training himself to do justice to the role of the Mohammed Ali character. His performance earned him his first academy awards nomination.
Will Smith later starred in a couple of sequels, repeating his roles in ‘Men in Black 2’ in 2002, ‘Bad Boys 2’ in 2003. He moved on to star in the sci-fi film ‘I Robot’ in 2004 when he played the part of a futuristic Cop investigating a murder done by a robot. The movie did well in the Box Office. He put his smooth talking and charming personality to use starring in the romantic comedy ‘Hitch’ in 2005, where he played the role of a dating consultant. He also did the theme song for the movie including it in his 2005 album ‘Lost and Found.’ He played the role of Dr. Bennet Omalu in the sports movie ‘Concussion’ earning him a Golden Globe nomination. He also starred in ‘Bright’ in 2017.
Will Smith is set to star as Genie in Guy Richie’s live adaptation of Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ in May 2019.
