This Singer and Songwriter was born on the 21st of December, 1985 in Tottenham, London, United Kingdom. She was born to a father who was a native of Ife, Ondo state, and a mother who was from the northern part of Nigeria and she is the last child after two elder brothers and a sister. The artist and her siblings were raised by their single mother. She started to visit Nigeria from the age of two. Seyi Shay attended Command Primary School and a year of Command secondary school before leaving for the UK. She later studied Music at a local college and went on to get a degree in Music Business Management in the University of East London, UK.

Her interest in music was spiked by her family, her late mother was a chorister in the Celestial Church of Christ and she went with her to rehearsals, her sister used to composed songs for the BBC and one of her brother, a radio and club Disc Jockey. She started performing at the age of six, she also joined her secondary school choir. She performed in the ‘London Community Gospel Choir’ during their world tour where they sang Christmas songs across 13 cities in Japan in three weeks at the age of 14.
In 2006, she formed a girl band called Boadicea in the UK, the girl band was managed by Ron Tom, the founder and manager of All saints and Sugababes, they broke up after two years and she decided to partake in the ‘From Above’ UK Singing Audition. After the audition, she came out as the lead vocalist for the ‘From Above’ group which was an all girls group that consisted of five girls – Seyi, two white girls, a Asian and a mixed. They caught the eyes of Matthew Knowles( Beyoncé’s father) while rehearsing in the studio, they sang for him and he later signed them into his Sony/Columbia Record and Music World Entertainment Company. They were taken by Matthew Knowles to Houston where they were trained on vocals, dance, how to behave and dress in public.
She came about her stage name from Matthew Knowles who couldn’t pronounce her name ‘Seyi’ so called her ‘Shay’. The group supported Beyoncé in her ‘I Am Beyoncé’ world tour where they performed as opening acts in Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, and London before about 16,000 guests every night. They were presented an award at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards and also their own MTV reality show called ‘Breaking From Above’ which was aired in over 166 countries across the world. The group later separated but Seyi Shay still had the opportunity to continue her management deal with Matthew Knowles and also a recording contract with Sony. Seyi has worked with a number of musicians such as Justin Timberland, Brian Michael Cox, Darey, Michelle Williams, Rob, Knoxx and many more.
START OF HER NIGERIAN MUSIC CAREER
Seyi Shay was introduced to Sound Sultan on his visit to London in 2011. After he listened to some of her demos, he convinced her to relocate to Nigeria to pursue her Music career. During a project with Sound Sultan, she was introduced to Cecil Hammond of Flytime Promotions. Cecil Hammond later signed Seyi Shay to his record label ‘Flytime Music’. She finally decided to startup her solo music career in Nigeria.
Work on her debut studio album ‘Seyi or Shay’ started as early as 2011, she worked with various producers in Nigeria, including Jay Sleek, Tee Y Mix, Del B and Cobhams Asuqwo. On the 11th of August, 2011, her two promotional singles, ‘Loving your Way’ and ‘No LeLe’ was released, these singles help launched her singing career in Nigeria. She also released the album lead single ‘Irawo’ on 27 July, 2012 which was produced by Del B. The single called ‘Erawo’ at first. During an interview, she revealed that she wrote the song to inspire her colleagues and work mates to pull together.
In August, 2013, her album’s second single ‘Killin’ Me Softly’ was released where she featured Timaya. The song was written and produced by Del B. She signed a partnership deal with J-Management – an International Talent Company in 2013. On the 6th of October, 2013, she released the ‘Ragga Ragga’ and ‘Chairman’ singles as the third and fourth singles on her album. Later on 8 January 2014, she released the music video for the ‘Ragga Ragga’ single which peaked as No. 7 on the MTV Base’s Official Naija Top 10 Chart from the 15th of March through to the 19th of March in 2014. On April 2014, Seyi released the single ‘Murda’ where she featured Patoranking and the Shaydee. She signed a record deal with Island Records in 2015.
