Philip David Charles Collins was born in Chiswick, London, England on January 30, 1951. His mother, Winifred June Strange, worked as a theatrical agent, while his father, Greville Philip Austin Collins, worked as an insurance agent.  

While his father’s job was mundane, Phil was interested in his mother’s job as a kid. He would go to theatres with her and watch people perform on stage. This was what inspired him and increased his interest in performing arts. 

When he was five, he got a drum kit as a birthday gift from his parents. Though the kit was just a toy, it delighted him and got his attention. He spent most of the time practicing with his toy and then got more professional kits as he grew up.
