Omawumi Megbele as she was christened by her parents was born on the 13th of April, 1982 to the family of Chief Dr. Frank and Mrs. Aya Megbele of the Itsekiri ethnicity. She attended Nana primary school for her primary education and then later moved to the College of Education Demonstration Secondary School where she finished her secondary education. Afterwards she studied for a Law Degree at the Ambrose Alli University, in Ekpoma, Edo State of Nigeria and graduated in 2005.
Upon graduation, she moved to Port Harcourt city in Rivers State, Nigeria and worked with her family’s Law firm called ‘O. S Megbele & Associates as a Barrister and a Legal Practitioner.
While at that, she equally studied French at the alliance Francaise in a quest to garner more knowledge.

She began her music career in 2007, when she contested on the Idols West Africa Competition with her strong voice and outgoing personality. She was voted the 1st Runner at the competition in May, 2007 and since then hasn’t looked back on her musical career. Omawumi has had numerous performances on the stage with many musicians like TuBaba, Psquare, D’Banj, M.I, Banky W, 9ice, Sasha; and also international performances with Chaka Demus and Pliers, Donnell Jones, Angie Stone, Carl Thomas, Angelique Kidjo amongst other notable artistes.
Aside from being a singer, she is also an actress and in 2009, played a minor role in the 2009 edition of the V’ Monologue which was a TV series that reflected the negative issues affecting women in Nigeria.
She equally took part in the musical play ‘Olorombi and in 2010, again acted a minor role in the movie titled ‘Inale’ which was a Hollywood/Nollywood collaboration movie produced by Bongus Ikwe production and featured notable actors like Hakeem Kae Hakeem, Dede Mabiaku and Ini Edo.
Omawumi also starred in Funke Akindele blockbuster movie titled ‘Return of Jenifa’ where she played a supporting role with Funke Akindele in 2011. Again, she took part in a yet another popular movie titled House of Gold’ in 2013 where she played alongside Yvonne Nelson of Ghana, Ice Prince Zamani and Majid Michel.
On her music career she has three albums with several hit songs like ‘If you ask me’, ‘When the Boss is coming’, ‘Bottom Belle, ‘The African way’ ‘The Best you can be’, ‘I Go Go’, ‘What a Bang Bang’, ‘In the Music’, ‘Brighter Day’, ‘Niger Delta’ , ‘Same Guy’, ‘Blessings flow’, and many other tracks.
In 2007, she signed a music deal Jay Z’s Roc Nation Label and her latest album “Timeless” was released on there.
