Contrary to some expectations, Rema is a Nigerian. He is a songwriter, recording artiste, singer, and entrepreneur. Full name, Divine Ikubor, Rema is a top trending Nigerian musician who, yet an 18-year-old Nigerian, has managed to wow the country.

Rema Early Life

Rema originates from the South Southern part of Nigeria. He was born in Benin City Edo State, to the Ikubor family in 2001. There in Benin City, Edo State, he got his primary and secondary education.

Rema railroaded into the adult scene following the death of his father when he was only eight years old. His father died from Asthma related issues; it was a massive blow to the singer and his family.

In 2015, tragedy struck again. Rema lost his brother to undisclosed causes. These massive loses made him begin seeing the world from a bleak perceptive.

To get over his loss, he developed a passion for music and began working on a two-way approach in his local church. He worked with teenagers in one session and adults in the next. Due to freedom to start a rap group from church, he enlisted other young churchgoers.

Before long, some grownups were fascinated by the rap group and joined in on the fun. They were able to gain a reputation in church owing to their dance moves and costumes.

While in secondary school, he began recording songs and tried projecting himself into the world, but all of his efforts only worked within the church scene.

Rise to Stardom

In 2018, Rema concluded his secondary education. And after a long time of staying underground, Rema dropped a free style cover on D’Prince’s Gucci Gang. This post got a lot of views, and through it, he received a direct message from D’Prince himself.

Before long, his music got the attention of a Top Nigerian Musician, D’Prince. D’Prince is a Nigerian Musician but he currently works as the CEO of Jonzingworld Record.

It was through this post that Rema relocated to Lagos. This move came as a result of D’Prince’s schedule to meet him up in Lagos. According to Rema, he was mostly afraid and excited about meeting the renowned Afrobeat’s producer.

D’Prince is the immediate younger brother to the Nigerian Billionaire Artiste and Producer Don Jazzy.

He recorded his trap vibes for D’Prince on reaching Lagos. D’Prince introduced Rema to Don Jazzy and got him signed on a joint contract to the Jonzing World Record and Mavin Records in 2018.

Most recently, Rema released follow-ups on earlier trap-leaning vibes on Instagram free styles. Currently, four of the songs are among the Top most-streamed songs in Nigeria.

In an interview, D’Prince described’s Rema vibes as a stunning talent beyond his years. This was stated when, D’Prince mentioned that he was hunting more talents for Mavin Global and at the time had only sent a direct message to the young star. So, through his discovery, he found Rema and introduced him to Don Jazzy.

By 22nd March 2019, Rema as revealed to the world as a new artiste under the Jonzing World and Mavins Records. Following this massive moment in history, he released a self-titled 4- track EP which ranked high on the billboards for several weeks as number one selling the album in Nigeria.

The highlights of this 4-track EP is the hit song “Dumebi,” a unique explosive track that has lots of Nigerians, dancing crazily for the past months.

One of the major highlights of the Dumebi video is rumoured as Rema’s girlfriend. She is Diana Eneje, a 16 Year Old Multi Award Winning Model And Business Woman.

This EP gained a reputation for following after the polished acts of top artistes like Reekado Banks and Tiwa hitting high marks even within the first weeks. The album features four entirely different tracks which incorporate the blends of the western blues and his terrific voice.  The records include – Dumebi, Iron Man, Corny and Why.

Within one month of its release, the EP hit Nigeria’s Apple Music Charts at the Number 1 spot. In no time, some individuals took to Social Media, stating that his voice looked similar to Nigerian Pop Sensation Wizkid while others indicated that his non-traditional spin did not move them on Afropop.

Rema Style and Personal Life

In answer to these criticisms, he boldly stated that the well-established act, Wizkid sings like him, Rema and not the other way around.

He also stated that his beats are meant for the younger generation, which is well adjusted to those crazy combinations as well as older people who want to evolve.

When asked about his mom’s reaction to his dynamic growth, this was what he had to say.

Last year, when I was recording, my mom kept telling me to come back to Benin. I didn’t have any music out, so she was like, “Boy, what are you doing in Lagos, come home and go to school.” I was just like, “Mom, hold on, let me just release this song.” When my EP dropped, she was like, “This is nice,” and then she saw the charts and was like, “Oooo.” But my mom is my motivation. She knows I never come home with bad news. Everything I do is successful.

According to Rema, his song Why, which is more western than African, is influenced by the likes of Lil Peep, Trippie Redd, and Juice WRLD.

However, the story behind the song came from the hard days in Benin. Rema met a girl who he liked. But due to his background, which was a far cry from her affluent background, she refused to become his friend. According to Rema, it was that rejection that fueled the story behind the music song.
