Martijn Gerard Garritsen is a musician and record producer from the Netherlands. He goes by the stage name Martin Garrix, and you may recognize him as the DJ whose music is categorized in ‘future bass’, ‘big room house’, ‘electro house’, and ‘progressive house’ genres. He started to play the guitar from a very young age. Martin has been influenced by fellow countryman DJ Tiësto and his display at the 2004 Athens Olympics’ opening ceremony. The superstar DJ was born to Karin and Gerard Garritsen in Amstelveen, Netherlands, on 14 May 1996, and started learning how to play the guitar from age eight. He grew up under the care of his parents and in the company of his sister Laura. He attended a production school in Utrecht, called the Herman Brood Academy. In the same 2015 he left the label ‘Spinnin’ Records’, and launched his own record label, ‘STMPD RCRDS’ the following year. His track, ‘Oops,’ was selected as ‘Electronic Entertainment Expo’ anthem song in 2016. In that same year, he signed a deal with Sony Music.
In 2017, he performed with Troye Sivan for Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival which was held in California. Since he began his career as a fourteen year old, Martin Garrix has since gone ahead to establish himself as one of the most popular DJ’s in the world, ranking 1st on DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs in 2016, while finishing 10th on the list of the highest paid DJs in the world in 2019.
