Mathis was born in the United States in the year 1966. After graduating from Baylor University where he earned a BBA in Marketing and Broadcasting, he launched his broadcasting vocation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and stayed there for a short time before moving on to WCIV in Charleston. He wasted no time before adding an Applied Science Degree in Meteorology, a qualification he obtained from Mississippi State University.

Fast-forward to 1994, Mark Mathis started working with WFAA in Dallas as a morning and noon meteorologist. He then advanced to KTBC in Austin, Texas before making a transfer to KSWB-TV in San Diego. In 2002, he joined WCCB in Charlotte, North Carolina, and worked here for a lengthy period of time. Segments from his shows in Charlotte were telecast on MTV, VH1, Late Night with David Letterman, WGN Radio, Fox News Channel, E!, Ifilm, the BBC, Germany National TV, and United Kingdom TV.
