Tracy Lauren Marrow is American rapper who goes by the stage name Ice-T. He is also a singer and actor who was born in Newark, New Jersey, but moved to Crenshaw district in Los Angeles. After completing his high school education, he joined the United States army where he served for four years. Before becoming a star, he basically lived a street life where he sold stolen things and peddled drugs to survive. He decided to straighten out his life, and embraced music as a way out. Luckily for him, he was offered the chance to redeem himself by getting signed to ‘Sire Records.’ He then released his first album ‘Rhyme Pays’, after which he founded his own record label ‘Rhyme Syndicate Records.’ He also co-founded the metal band ‘Body Count,’ which he introduced in one of his albums. Warner Bros records had to call it quit with him when he got engulfed in a controversy over his single ‘Cop Killer,’ which glorified the murder of police officers. His later albums were failure. He has been active on television recently, portraying the fictional character of detective ‘Odafin Tutuola’ in the popular series ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.’ He has also been seen in several films appearing as gangsters or police officers.
Ice-T’s Early Life
Ice-T whose real name is Tracy Lauren Marrow was born on February 16, 1958, in Newark, New Jersey, in the United States. His mother was a Creole named Alice Marrow, while his father was Solomon, an African-American who was employed at Rapistan Conveyor Company as a mechanic. Though he lived in a neighbourhood where racism was high while growing up, he escaped the taunts and uncomfortable situations because of his lighter skin which he got from his Creole mother.
By the time he was 12 years of age, he had lost his parents. He was left with the option of going over to View Park-Windsor Hills, near Los Angeles to live with his aunt’s family. He shared a space with Earl his cousin who was a big time rock fan. Ice soon became interested in rock and heavy metal music. He was sent Palms Junior High after which he attended Crenshaw High School. Gangism was a big part of the school system while he was in high school. Members of the Bloods and Crips gangs who were students attended Crenshaw High School and often fought in school. He was never part of any of the gangs but their presence affected him to an extent. He often read novels by Iceberg Slims and recited stories to his friends.
Ice-T started rapping in 1981. Six years later, he came forth with his first studio album titled ‘Rhyme Pays’. It became the very first album which consisted of a sticker for explicit content in the history of Hip-Hop. In his career so far he has released a total of eight solo albums, including Home Invasion, Gangsta Rap, The Seventh Deadly Sin, and Ice-T VI: Return of the Real. He has worked with many record labels including Century Media, Sumerian, Sire, Saturn, and Priority. He also launched his own record company named ‘Rhyme $yndicate Records’, with which he released his album titled ‘Power.’
In the early 90s, he formed a heavy metal group called ‘Body Count.’ With this group, he made six albums till date, including Born Dead, Murder 4 Hire, Manslaughter, and Violent Demise: The Last Days. Their most recent project was an album ‘Bloodlust’ which was released in 2017.
