Born February 4, 1983, in Chicago, Illinois by Margaret, a teacher, and John Buress, a Union Pacific Railroad staff, Hannibal Buress grew up in Austin.

While growing up, his name Hannibal gave him issues as people associated his name with the fictional cannibal character, Hannibal Lecter. He had joked during his stand-up comedy sessions that the name caused women to turn him down but it had been recorded that he was named after the Carthaginian general, Hannibal Barca. After graduating high school from Steinmetz College Prep, he proceeded to the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale but didn’t graduate. There he met Open Mike Eagle, a hip hop artiste he later became friends with.

Hannibal Buress started his comedy career at a stand-Up mic event in 2002. As an upcoming comedian, he made his tour of the comedy circuit by performing both on the big stage as well as hosting small gigs. He was featured in The Awkward Comedy Show, a special aired on Comedy central alongside Baron VaughnEric André, and Victor Varnado. He also appeared in the FX sitcom, Louie. He got his big break when he became a writer for Saturday Night Live which he did from 2009-2010.

On July 27, 2010, he released his first stand-up comedy album titled My Name is Hannibal. The album was released to rave reviews. In September of 2010, he started writing for the fifth season of 30 Rock, the NBC comedy series, from which he quit from after six months. Hannibal Buress spoke out against the sexual scandal issue that surrounded Bill Cosby. On October 16, 2014, while doing a set at The Trocadero, a club in Philadelphia, he was recorded saying that Bill Cosby has a legacy of talking down on young black men about their dress sense and lifestyle.

Buress also criticized the actor’s public moralizing persona by calling him out on the rape allegations saying that he is no longer a saint that he wants people to think he was.

That was not the first time Buress would be criticizing the elderly actor but this particular set got worldwide attention after it was posted on Philadelphia magazine’s website. This brought the issue to the consciousness of many individuals who went up in arms against the elderly actor.

Actor Eddie Murphy later referenced Buress’ role in making the allegations come to light in his acceptance speech when he was accepting his Mark Twain Prize for American Humor award in 2015.

Hannibal Buress was arrested for disorderly intoxication while he was in Miami in December 2017. He was recorded mocking the arresting police officers and demanding to know the offense he was being arrested for. He was recorded asking the arresting police officer to call him an Uber to take him home. It was later reported by the Miami New Times that the arresting officer has had an alleged history of violence and had been previously disciplined by the police internal affairs for an alcohol-fueled assault.
