Gloria Laura Vanderbilt was born in Manhattan, New York, United States, on February 20, 1924, to the rich and famous railroad heir Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt. She was born in his second marriage to Gloria Morgan.
She grew up alongside a half-sister, from her father’s first marriage to Cathleen Neilson. When she was 18 months old, her father died, leaving her to be raised by her mother who took her on extensive trips to Europe.
