Doris Day is an American actress, artist, and singer who is popularly known for the amazing musical talent that has brought her this far. She started her music career singing with several big bands in 1939 and before embarking on a solo career in 1947.

Early Life, Parents, and Background

Doris Day was born on the 3rd of April,1922 to Alma Sophia and Joseph William in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her mother was a home-builder, and her dad was a professor of music and a conductor. Her maternal and paternal grandparents were German. Her paternal grand father, Franz Joseph Wilhelm Kappelhoff, immigrated to the United States in 1875 and settled at Cincinnati which had a large German community along with its churches, German-language newspapers and clubs.

She was the youngest of three siblings and had two elder brothers, Richard and Paul. Richard died before her birth and Paul was two to three years older.

Doris developed an early interest in dance and formed a dance duo with Jerry Doherty that performed locally in Cincinnati. However, she had a car accident in 1937 and injured her right leg. This curtailed her prospects as a professional dancer.

Doris Day Career

She discovered her singing talent while singing along with the radio during her recovery from the accident. Her mother enrolled Doris for singing lessons after observing her sing. Her teacher, Grace Raine was so impressed after three lessons and told her mother that Doris had tremendous potential.

Doris had her first professional job as a vocalist on a radio programme, while still taking singing lessons. There, she caught the attention of Barney Rapp who was on the lookout for female vocalist for his band.

She changed her last name to Day from Kappelhoff at Barney’s suggestion who felt that the former name was too long. Day besides working for Barney also worked with band leaders such as Jimmy James, Bob Crosby and Les Brown. While working with Brown, Day dropped her hit single Sentimental Journey in 1945. Dorris Day went solo in 1947 and achieved great success as a recording artist. From 1947 to 1967 Doris Day had over 650 recordings and released 31 albums.

Movie Career

Day had her film debut on Romance on the high Seas (1948). She was cast for the role by director Michael Curtiz after auditioning. She was shocked at the offer and admitted to Curtiz of not having any acting experience. He liked her honestly but emphasized that he wanted someone who looked like the “All- Amercian Girl”. Curtiz was most proud of Day’s discovery during his career. The movie gave Day a No 2 hit ” Its Magic” as a solo artist  and she continued to make frequent musicals.

Her musicals included Calamity Jane (1953), Young at Heart (1954), Love Me or Leave Me (1955), and The Pajama Game (1957) and others.

Day’s most commercially successful movie was ” I’ll See You In My Dreams” (1951) which smashed box office records of 20 years. The film is a musical biography of lyricist Gus Kahn and was her fourth directed by Curtiz.

Her personal image, that of a smart and healthy woman of unfailing optimism and unassuming strength of character was the model American woman of the fifties. Ever since the talented actress started in the movie industry, she has acted over 20 films and short movies.

Personal Life

Day lived at Carmel-by – the-Sea, California, following her exit from films. She had plenty of dogs and took street animals. She was a Republican for life. Her only child was Terry Melcher, a music producer and songwriter. He died in November 2004 of melanoma.

Dorris has been unlucky in marriages as she has been married four times. She was married to a trombonist Al Jorden, in Barney Rapp’s gang, from March 1941 to February 1943.He later took his life. Her second marriage was to the saxophone player and the actress’s brother Virginia Weidler from 30 March 1946 to 31 May 1949.

American filmmaker Martin Melcher married Dorris on the 3rd of April, 1951 on his 29th birthday. Many of Day’s movies were made by Martin Melcher. They were both Christian scientists, so for some time she didn’t see a doctor for signs suggesting cancer. The fourth union took place between 14 April 1976 and 2 April 1982 to Barry Comden (1935–2009).

Death

After having contracted pneumonia, Day died on 13 May 2019, at the age of 97. Her own foundation, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, announced her death. At the request of Day, the Foundation announced no funeral, tomb or other public monuments would be available.

The Society of Singers has awarded her the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and Legend Award. She was nominated in 1960 for the Best Actress Academy Award and in 1989 was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. She received the Presidential Medal of Liberty in 2004, followed by the Career Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association in 2011.
