Denzel did his elementary studies at Pennington-Grimes Elementary school at Mount Vernon till 1968. His parents separated when he was fourteen, and he was sent by his mother to Oakland Military Academy, a private preparatory school in New Windsor, New York, he went next to Mainland High school, a public school in Daytona Beach, Florida from the year 1970 to 1971. When he was still in Fordham University, he played collegiate basketball as a guard under coach P. J. Carlesimo. Since he could not decide on what to major in, he decided to take the semester off to work as a creative arts director at an overnight summer camp, Camp Sloane YMCA in Lakeville Connecticut. There he participated in a staff talent show where he did well in acting. After a colleague suggested to him to try acting, he returned to the university with a renewed aim and registered at the Lincoln Centre Campus to study acting.
