Refiloe Maele Phoolo who is popularly known by fans and friends as Cassper Nyovest is one of South Africa highest rapping artist, record producer, and recording artist.


Refiloe Maele Phoolo whom we know as Cassper Nyovest is a recording artist and record producer much loved by his home country, South Africa and the rest of the world.

He came into the spotlight when he launched his debut album titled “Tsholofelo” which was greatly received by many throughout the country. His is also known for his hit single “Mama I Made It’ and currently has his record label, Family Tree.  It is no news that he is one of the top most influential artists in South Africa.


Cassper Nyovest was born on the 16th of December in the year 1990 in Montshiwa, Mafikeng, the capital city of the North West Province in South Africa. He also spent most of his early childhood in this section of the country. He was raised by his parents who were both teachers and has been solidly behind him since he first displayed interest in music.

During his high school education at the Sol Plaatje Secondary School, Cassper became an athlete participating actively in football, cricket, and basketball. However, he has always loved music, and he began grooming his rapping skills at the age of 12 while in secondary school (grade 6).

By the time he was in grade 10, he had begun to lose interest in education and sought to give his music, complete attention. At this time, he failed his grade 10 exams and decided to run away to his grandmother’s home in Potschefstroom.

At the age of 16, Cassper finally chose to live school entirely. In a statement to a media house, he said: “I told my parents that I would rather chase my dream which I believe is going to work out, rather than keeping it safe and regretting my whole life.”

After making this decision, he relocated to the busy capital of South Africa, Johannesburg to pursue his career professionally as a producer and rapper.


Cassper began his music career as a child and even joined a rapping group who called themselves “Childhood Gangsters” in 2004, but they got disbanded. He joined a different group made of Eight members “Slow Motion,” and this had the production team Ganja Banta as well. This was before he left high school and relocated to Johannesburg.  He then got signed by the Motswako label “Impact Sounds”. But his career got no boost under this record label, and he was unable to release any songs.  He left this record label and moved back home to start a label on his own. However, despite the sad spirits, he was not defeated and began performing at local shows gaining popularity in his area. After many months without a successful outbreak, the Motswako rapper HHP saw Cassper perform at one show and decided to featuring him in his album “Wamo Tseba Mtho.” This was the outstanding breakthrough that got him into the spotlight.

He began embarking on international tours across Africa and Europe and made performances on stages and shows that saw the likes of Nas, Talib Kweli, Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi and Wiz Khalifa. Several years later he got involved in a quarrel against another South African rapper, the renowned AKA and this “beef” suddenly enveloped into diss records tracks about each other.


In 2013, Cassper developed and released a track which he christened his official hit single “ Gusheshe” from his debut album “Tsholofelo.” This hit single got him so much popularity as it was played across many radio stations across South Africa.

His second hit single titled “Doc Shebeleza
also gained him added popularity as the song debuted at the No 4 spot on South Africa’s official music chart receiving many astounding reviews from many individuals and celebrities such as the Sexy, Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

In 2014, he officially released the full album, and this debuted on the No 1. spot of iTunes South Africa for two months in a row before being kicked off by Duncan’s “Street Government.” In 2014, he was ranked No 1. on “The Hottest MC in Africa” by MTV Base. He was also ranked number 2 on the “SA’s Hottest MC” list by MTV Base


After the release of his debut album, Cassper began to hint the coming of a second album. He worked with the likes Veggies, DJ Drama, Wizkid, Anatii, and Casey. This album “ Platinum Edition” was released in 17th April 2015, although only about 10,000 copies were printed.

In October that same year, Nyovest began working on another album which he planned to headline at a concert. The title of the album was called “Refiloe.” He made many plans for this album such as planning to fill the Ticket Pro Dome with loyal fans and admirers, and all of this came through. This dome accommodates 20,000 people, and yes it was filled to its full capacity.

This he achieved by releasing many of his hit singles before the final album via social media; He was also named the hottest MC in Africa by one of Nigeria’s leading blog as well as MTV Base South Africa.

Cassper Nyovest has released many hit tracks and albums during his years in the music industry. He has come away from the kid who left education to face his passion with no money in his pockets. He is a legend in the industry.

Nyovest has received many endorsements, and in 2015, he was endorsed by AG Mobile. In 2017, he signed a sponsorship with Premium Vodka Brand Ciroc


Cassper Nyovest at one time was dating the actress Botumelo Thulo, and officially they told the DRUM, about their love affair but later came out to deny this. The couple broke up in December 2015.
