Burna Boy was born on the second of July 1991 to Mr and Mr’s Ogulu in Ahoada Rivers State. He grew up in Ahoada but later moved to Lagos where he did his Primary Secondary education in Agbara Lagos.

Upon graduating from secondary school, he moved to the United Kingdom where he decided to enroll in a tertiary school but left it along the line after two years and returned to Nigeria.


Burna Boy delved into the music world after his lifelong favorite artist Fela Anikulapo Kuti whose manager was also his grandfather Benson Idons.

He began his career in 2010 with an upcoming label at that time the Aristokrat records.

His first hit single was “Abeg Abeg Abeg” which started him off on his way to fame.

In 2012, he got an even more significant break when he released the song “Life To Party” which was directed by Square Bell Media.

In 2013, he released his first studio album “life” featuring many top artists such as Tuface and Wizkid. From then on he got so popular and began receiving worldwide recognition and endorsements deals.

Been influenced by the likes of Fela and Buju Baton his music is something he describes as Afro-fusion which is a combination of Dancehall, R&B, Hip-hop and Afrobeats.

Burna Boy has released many lovely and inspiring albums such as the two mixtapes he did with Aristokrat records namely “Burn notice” and “Burn identity” for which the music hit “Abeg Abeg Abeg” surfaced.

He is also known for his favorite tracks “Sweetest girl ft Leriq” and “Wombo lombo something.”

He has also released albums such as “On A Spaceship” released in 2011 and an EP (Extended play) called “Redemption” among many others.

Apart from this he also released a cover on “Frank Ocean’s Novocain” which he titled “My journey” on which he shared a bit of his personal life.

Burna Boy has made many achievements since the onset of his music career. Some of these achievements include:

  • In 2013 he was nominated and won the “Best New Act” of the year by the Nigeria Entertainment Award.
  • He also won best pop from South- South Music Awards in the same year.
  • Also in 2013, he was nominated for “Next Rated” at the Headies 2013.
  • In 2014, he won the award “Best New Act” from the MTV Africa Music Awards and “Best Album of the year” from Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
  • He has also been nominated for some other titles such as “Best R & B Single,” “Best R& B pop album” Hip-hop world, “Revelation of the year”  and “Album of the year,” all in 2014.
  • In 2015, he received a nomination for “Best Pop Artiste of the Year” from the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.


Burna Boy despite his talents has been known for many scandals and controversies that one only wonders the miracle at work in his life. He has a rap sheet that many gangsters only dream off but cannot pull it through without ending up in jail or worse, death.

In 2010, while living in the United Kingdom Burna Boy was said to have been involved in a gang whose activities lead to the murder of an individual, he was tried and sentenced to jail where he served eleven months and was paroled for his good behaviors.

However, he disobeyed his parole and returned to Nigeria to sign his first deal.  This event leads to his deportation from the United Kingdom and because of this he can no longer travel to UK until after fifteen years.

In 2017, after a few months of signing a life-changing recording contract with Atlantic Records, he was declared a key suspect in Mr 2-Kay‘s robbery at Eko Hotels & Suites.

This scandal led to the cancellation of two headline shows scheduled to hold in Lagos and Port Harcourt that December.

Furthermore, this robbery scandal threatened to overshadow the release of his album outside a six-disc catalog that contains two acclaimed mixtapes and a debut album. Nonetheless,  the music album “Outside” debuted at a No3 spot on the Billboard Reggae chart.

In the year 2016, Burna Boy alongside several other Artistes was signed as Brand Ambassador to Martel Cognac.

He was also signed as a Glo brand ambassador although this deal was closed down. Burna Boy networth at this time is estimated at $10 million.
