TIMI DAKOLO BIOGRAPHY
Timi was born on 20th January, 1981 in Accra, Ghana to a Nigerian father and a Ghanaian mother. His father name is David and he is a native of Bayelsa state while his mother’s name is Norah. Timi lost his mother when he was thirteen year old and was raised by his grandmother, Ateni Dakolo and aunty, Susan Larry in Port Harcourt.
He had his primary and secondary education in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. For his tertiary education, he gained admission into the University of Port Harcourt for a degree in Communication Studies but it is uncertain if he completed this programme.
Timi Dakolo credits his aunty, Susan Larry as his early singing teacher and started singing in church at the age of 12. In 2003, he and others formed a group called Purple Love that dominated the Port Harcourt club circuit at that time. However, the group disbanded in 2005 after all members gained admission into the University. Around this same time, Timi won G.E FACTO, a local talent hunt held in Port Harcourt.
Despite being born in Ghana to a Ghanaian mother, Timi doesn’t claim dual citizenship and only carries a Nigerian passport.
IDOLS WEST AFRICA
Timi Dakolo was one of the contestants for the reality show Idols West Africa which he eventually won. He audition for the show in 2006 at Calabar with songs from Commisioned “More Than I” and Lemar “Time To Grow”. The judges were impressed with his vocals and saw his as a strong contender for the prize.
However, a week before the viewing of the Top 24 performances, he received news that he had lost of his beloved grandmother. Though painful and heartbreaking, he pulled himself together and drew strength from his Christian faith to pull through the competition.
He was impressive throughout the show and was never in the bottom three. The producers of the competition disclosed in the final three weeks that Timi scored the highest number of votes each of those weeks.

Timi Dakolo’s music career took off after the Idols West Africa competition in 2007. Winning this competition had secured for him a recording contract with Sony BMG in addition to other prizes.
He released his first single comprising three songs in October 2009 and in 2011 again released another song titled “There’s a Cry”.
He is currently signed on Lone Records / Now Muzik and is also one of the Judges on The Voice Nigeria.
