Yemi Alade was born Yemi Eberechi Alade on the 13th of March, 1989, in Abia State of Nigeria to her father, James Alade of Yoruba descent and mother, Helen Uzoma of Ibo descent. This mixed cultural parentage is why she has been able to blend with both tribes in Nigeria. Yemi is the fifth child out of seven and began her education at St. Saviors British Primary school. She later attended Victory Grammar school in Lagos for her secondary education before proceeding to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to obtain a Bachelors Degree in Geography. After graduation, she jumped fully into music and has never looked back.
Yemi Alade began her music career with an all girls group called ‘Noty spices’ in 2005, and then burst into limelight after winning the Peak Talent Show in 2009. This win catapulted her into the spotlight and presented her with the necessary platform to push her musical career.
She first released her single tilted ‘Fimisile’ under the ‘Jus kiddin’ label and then went on to join ‘Effyzzie Music Group’ in 2012 and there released the single titled ‘Ghen Ghen Love’.
Yemi Alade gathered momentum and in 2013, she released the video for the romantic afro cum R&B song titled ‘Bamboo’ and in the latter part of the year released another single titled ‘Johnny’ produced by Selebobo, which became an instant hit and brought her mega fame and name recognition in the industry.
The song ‘Johnny’ became really big causing a lot of excitement for fans and music lovers not only in Nigeria but the world over. The video of “Johnny” was released in March 2014 and was shot by ace director, Clarence Peters. This video has gone on to gather over 91 million views on YouTube and still counting.
Her outstanding performance in her career earned her a place with the likes of MI Abaga, Waje, Timi Dakolo, and Burna Boy on the theme song for Port Harcourt, the UNISCO 2014 World Book Capital. She has performed alongside international artistes like Mary J Blige and has also featured local and international stars on her musical projects.
Yemi Alade released her first album in 2014 titled ‘Kings of Queens’and then she went on to released the second in 2016 titled ‘Mama Africa’, which had Selebobo and Fliptyce as both producers of the album.
